Book and cover design// photography// interpretation
In response to the penguin live brief, I designed a book cover that I thought best responded to the book Norwegian wood by Haruki Murakami. The plot of the story focuses on a complicated love triangle between the three main characters and explores themes of grief, loss, depression and sex. I wanted to keep the cover simple and easy to interpret without being to complicated to understand so decided to focus solely on the relationship between the three main characters in the book.
my concept focused on the three main characters of the book and their complicated love triangle, deciding to represent this through images of the heart. I wanted these three hearts to represent the three main characters which would then be layered one over another to represent their connection to one another. I did this by printing these hearts onto different coloured sheets of tracing paper (yellow, blue and red) to represent the various different emptions the characters experienced during the book.
These layered hearts created interesting patterns with each other which I captured and experimented with using the medium of macro photography.
